Oranges

The common sweet orange is probably a hybrid of ancient pomelos and tangerines that grew wild throughout Asia. They were brought to the new world both by Juan Ponce de Leon and Christopher Columbus. Several varieties and hybrids exist today, including the bitter Seville, the sweet Valencia, and the navel. The blood orange, grown throughout the Mediterranean and more recently in California, contains streaks of red pigment on its skin and within it.
